The Caine School of the Arts at Utah State University presents the Cache Chamber Orchestra at 7 p.m. Sunday, June 28, in the Kent Concert Hall of the Chase Fine Arts Center on the USU campus (approximately 1110 E. 610 North, Logan). Admission is free.
The orchestra, under the direction of Robert Frost, completed its 35th concert season during the regular academic year at USU. Summer concerts are a recent addition.
“This pop series began last summer and was so popular with the audience that we decided to expand to three concerts this year,” said Frost. “One of the highlights this season is the addition of each soloist.”
Returning as a performer with the Cache Chamber Orchestra for the June 28 concert is vocalist Randall J. Smith. Among other selections, Smith will sing the American Folk song “The Water is Wide,” as well as “Bring Him Home” from “Les Miserables.”
Smith is a USU graduate and is the choir director at Logan High School. Smith sang the lead roles in four operas and operettas. Smith has also performed as a tenor soloist for Musica Reservata, the Northern Utah Choral Society and as a soloist and musical director for the Festival of the American West’s pageant.
Also featured as a guest conductor is Dan Stowell, recently retired director of bands at Logan High School.
The summer pops series provides an opportunity for the orchestra to showcase well known selections from various popular genres, including stage and screen.
The June 29 concert will feature “The Best of the Beatles,” “Memories” (from “Cats”) and “A Tribute to Henry Mancini,” along with several light classics to add variety and round out the program. The string section will also be featured on an arrangement of Beethoven’s “Moonlight Sonata.”
The Cache Chamber Orchestra is a community-based group that is sponsored by USU’s Department of Music. The final concert of the series is July 12 and features guitarist and music department faculty member Michael Christiansen.
